Bach's "Christmas Oratorio"
Sounds of Stow Chorus & Orchestra (Barbara Jones, Artistic Director) with Nicole Estima, soprano; Deborah Rentz-Moore, mezzo; Jason Wang, tenor; James Dargan, baritone; Kyle Spraker, trumpet
Sounds of Stow is opening its 41st season with an encore performance of Bach's "Christmas Oratorio". While the holiday season is often associated with Handel's “Messiah,” Bach's “Christmas Oratorio” (1734),  a collection of six separate cantatas that relate the story of the nativity in details drawn from various Biblical sources, is equally important. Through an ever-engaging series of choruses, chorales, solo arias, intimate instrumental interludes and narrated recitatives, the familiar story comes to life in a way that has universal appeal for people of all religious outlooks. Sounds of Stow will return to its acclaimed 2014 version of this glorious work, in which the entire narrative is preserved, all choral material is presented, and moving arias are beautifully rendered by superb vocal and instrumental soloists. Recitatives are replaced by dramatic readings narrated by Margot Law, so that the work flows in a continuous emotional arc.
2pm - Hale Middle School, 55 Hartley Road, Stow, MA 01775
$25 general admission; $20 students and seniors; $10 children under 18. Available online, at the door, and at Emma's Cafe in Stow and Serendipity in Hudson.
