"Musick's Recreation:" At-Home Viol Playing in 17th and 18th Century Massachusetts
Lyracle: Ashley Mulcahy, mezzo-Soprano; James Perretta, viola da gamba
Experience 17th and 18th century music intended for at-home entertainment in a house built c1730! This program focuses on a few documented viol players in colonial MA as well as viol players who were left out of historical records. We connect what we can infer about their varied musical experiences to English repertoire publish by John Playford for voice with bass viol accompaniment and for solo viol that was likely present in 17th and early 18th century MA. Since the viol was important to the culture of recreational music making at the time, we are excited to explore at-home music-making through a historic lens and connect our own music-making to a local historical narrative.
6pm - Sudbury History Center and Museum, 288 Old Sudbury Road Sudbury, MA 01776

VdGS-NE Fall Mini-Workshop
1-2:30pm - Twilight Music: Abel’s Pembroke Sonatas - Arnie Tanimoto, instructor
Carl Friedrich Abel was one of the last viol masters of the 18th century. In this class we'll explore one of his gorgeous Pembroke Sonatas, which offer an opportunity for an in-depth look at the humor and sentimentality of the Gallant style. Players will have a chance to work on the solo viol part and/or the bass line as we deconstruct the music to work out stylistic and technical issues. A score will be sent ahead of time so participants can familiarize themselves with the music and play along as they please. For advanced players; others may play continuo or audit.
3-4:30pm - Intro to Figured Bass on the Viol - James Perretta, instructor
Playing continuo on the viol gives us access to a unique sonic landscape: We can play full chords while still producing the rich, sustained sound of a bowed bass instrument. Learning to play from figured bass is an excellent place to start on the road towards becoming your own one-person continuo band! We'll work on 1. Learning the figures: what the figures in figured bass tell us about adding notes. 2. Cadences and chord shapes: common patterns we can use for cadences, and useful chord shapes for general situations. 3. Musical examples: Using phrases from music by Caccini, Marais, and others, we’ll work through the figured bass lines, discuss options and tradeoffs, and play our very own newly-created, fully-realized continuo parts! For intermediate-advanced players; auditors welcome.
1-4:30pm - on Zoom
$15 members / $20 nonmembers, per class. Materials and Zoom link will be sent to registrants.
Register at vdgsne.org. Deadline: Nov. 8, 2021

Pilgrims' Progress: Anniversary Concert
Seven Times Salt: Barbara Allen Hill, soprano, percussion; Karen Burciaga, violin, guitar, voice; Dan Meyers, recorders, flute, percussion, voice; Josh Schreiber, bass viol, voice; Matthew Wright, lute, cittern, voice
We mark Plymouth’s 400th anniversary in this concert, rescheduled from 2020. The early Plimoth colonists, or “Pilgrims” as they were later called, were a diverse group of Separatists and Anglicans, religious zealots and irreverent opportunists. They brought with them music experiences as varied as their reasons for coming to the New World. This lively program creates a musical backdrop for the settlers, moving from their homes in England’s cities and countryside to religious refuge in the Netherlands, and onward to their challenging new lives in the New World. We present music of the Elizabethan tavern and theater, spirited catches, Dutch songs, stirring psalms from the Ainsworth Psalter, and vigorous 17th-century dance tunes, all performed on period instruments. We also read fictitious "diary entries" of the colonists in Original Pronunciation, as English sounded in the time of Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I—and the Pilgrims! Meet the musicians at a reception afterwards. Copies of our album “Pilgrims’ Progress” will be available for sale.
3pm - Church of the Pilgrimage, 8 Town Square, Plymouth, MA
$20 donation. Reception to follow.

Two Sides to Every Story: Baroque Trio Sonatas from Above and Below
Miyo Aoki, recorder, Jonathan Oddie, harpsichord
No genre of instrumental chamber music is more typically Baroque than the trio sonata: a composition for two soloists and basso continuo in which each of the three parts has equal importance. Originating in the early 17th century, the trio sonata rose in prominence to become the archetype of elegant Baroque composition with the sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli. The trio sonata style proved so appealing and influential that even compositions for larger forces such as concerti grossi can often be understood as expanded trio sonatas with extra inner parts. This class on the trio sonata will explore the nuances of this genre from the dual perspectives of the solo instrumentalist and the basso continuo player. Instructors Miyo Aoki (recorder) and Jonathan Oddie (harpsichord) will discuss and demonstrate how a continuo player can tailor the accompaniment to support the solo parts, and how the soloists and continuo players can interact in conversational dialogue. Geared to: intermediate and up players of treble instruments, bass line instruments, and keyboard players. Pitch: A=440.

Loren Ludwig, viola da gamba
Let's play (along with) some William Lawes! Safely muted in their home music rooms, participants will play along with iconic (as well as some exciting but lesser-known) recordings of five- and six-part consort music by the "Beethoven of Britain." There will be less talking and more playing, and we'll survey as much of this terrific music in excellent recordings as we can. Entirely risk free, this is an opportunity to "double" some of the finest consort players in the land as they tackle some of period's richest and most delightful music. Geared to: all levels and instrument sizes welcome. Pitch: A=415.

Cornucopia - Music of Growth and Plenty
Convivium Musicum (Michael Barrett, Musical Director)
The cornucopia, or horn of plenty -- broken off the goat who helped to nourish the baby Zeus on the island of Crete and endowed by Zeus with the power to replenish its contents, or so the story goes -- is an apt metaphor for the abundance of vocal polyphony in the European tradition that has come down to us, and, for many, the nourishment this music provides. Convivium celebrates its return to live performance with a program on themes of growth, plenty, and variety: in texts, musical techniques, and composers. Works by Byrd, Aleotti, Senfl, Rossi, Schütz, Lusitano, Sweelinck, and more.
8:00pm - Harvard Epworth Church, 1555 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA 02138

The Singer’s Toolbox: J. S. Bach Wants to Change Your Life! - Interpreting Bach Cantata Arias
Pamela Dellal, voice
Bach's sacred cantatas pursue a powerful agenda: through musical means the composer intends to effect a spiritual conversion. This course will reveal how Bach uses startling shifts of harmony, texture, and phrasing to evoke and manipulate emotion; how his musical material deepens and adds complexity to the message of the text; and how Bach's ultimate goal is achieved by penetrating our resistance and composure, breaking down the traditional barriers that divide performer and hearer.

Secular Lieder of Heinrich Isaac
Frances Blaker, recorder
In this class we’ll focus on four 4-part pieces that differ vastly in expression and content, but all have motivic similarities. We’ll look at three secular works by Heinrich Isaac— the lovely quodlibet Fortuna Desperata /Bruder Conrad, then Bruder Conrad and Ich stund an einem Morgen, and wrap up with a jaunty tune by the infamous anonymous, Wohlauff gut gesell von hinen, found in the 1540 collection of German Lieder with the delightful description ...”Second book of shorter, better and newer lieder to be sung with glee...” I will encourage you to do just that—play with passion and glee on your SATB recorders. Geared to: intermediate and up recorders. Pitch: A=440. This will be a good opportunity for anyone wanting to hone their skills at reading up an octave on the alto, and counting whole and half notes as the beat.

4:00pm - United Parish in Brookline, 210 Harvard St, Brookline, MA 02446
$25 full price, $15 student / senior / reduced

Telemann’s Pimpinone and Ino
BEMF Chamber Ensemble (Robert Mealy, concertmaster) with Danielle Reutter-Harrah, Douglas Williams, and Amanda Forsythe
Musical Directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs alongside Stage Directors Gilbert Blin and Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière lead three of BEMF’s favorite singers and the all-star BEMF Chamber Ensemble in this engaging double bill.
Explore the depth and scope of Telemann’s genius with a fascinating pairing of comedy and drama. Inspired by the comic intermezzi of Pergolesi, Pimpinone approaches social class and seduction with stylish slapstick and evocative humanity as the narcissistic Pimpinone is stung by the beauty and barbs of his charming chambermaid, Vespetta. The cantata Ino is a true hidden gem with a thrilling story drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Written late in Telemann’s life, this miniature masterpiece is a bridge between the Baroque and Classical eras, full of scintillating theatrics and show-stopping virtuosity.
8pm - New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St. Boston, MA
Virtual Premiere: Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 8pm (ET) Available to watch until December 25, 2021 at 11:59pm (ET)
