“Tandernaken, al op den Rijn” (sometimes also spelled T’Andernaken, or Tandernack) is the title of a popular 15th c. A Complete Beginner's Introduction to 16th century Mensural Notation
Annette Bauer, instructor
Are you curious about the origins of our Western modern notation system? How was music written down in the 16th century? Would you like to know how to differentiate longa, breve, semibreve, and minim? Are you up for a fun challenge playing from historical clefs? And what about those ligatures? There is no time like the present to dip your toes (and fingers) into the wonderful world of original notation, specifically mensural notation, the system primarily used during the 14th-16th centuries. Being able to read from the original greatly enhances our understanding of how the music we love works and can give new insights for our performance practice. One might compare this process to how reading a work of literature in its original language reveals a world of nuances hidden in even the best of translations. Our sessions will focus on reading and playing practice. We will work from easily accessible 16th century sources. We will take baby steps, and I am available to answer all of your questions. Music and recordings will be provided and can be used for your individual practice at home between sessions. Open to all instruments and singers. All levels welcome - basic abilities on your instrument/voice and basic music-reading skills are a prerequisite. Sound files of the pieces are accessible for personal practice between classes.
Tuesdays 7:00-8:15pm ET on September 17, 24, October 1, 8

Passion and Nostalgia
Scheckmate: Raffael Scheck, cello, Timothy Burris, archlute and guitar, with special guest Adelia Scheck, cello
This eclectic program includes music from the 18th through the 20th centuries and features pieces that express deep passion, sometimes inward-looking and soft, and sometimes exuberant and powerful. The program begins with two 18th century works, Antonio Vivaldi's introspective but happy and suite-like B-flat major cello sonata, followed by a caprice for solo cello by the Brussels-born Italian Giuseppe Maria Dell'Abaco (1710- 1805). Mr Burris will then play a set of solo guitar works he calls 'Three Generations', starting with Julián Arcas's "Bolero"; "Lagrima" by an Arcas pupil, the better known Francisco Tárrega follows; the set concludes with a work by a Tárrega pupil, Daniel Fortea, his "Elegía" (an homage to Tárrega). In direct response, Mr Scheck will play an homage to Arcas written in 2017 by German cellist and gambist Dietmar Berger. Raffael and Adelia Scheck will play a canon for two cellos by Domenico Gabrielli. The program concludes with the nostalgic three nocturnes by German composer Friedrich Burgmüller.
2:30pm - 143 State Street, Portland
Tickets at the door: $15, $10 for seniors

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror
Arpeggione
Sink your fangs into this Halloween season with Arpeggione. Experience the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror with a live performance of the original score for theater orchestra at Cinema Salem. Arpeggione will be performing on historical instruments from the early 20th century, including harmonium, flute, clarinet, and strings. From the eerily corpse-like appearance of Max Schreck as Orlok to the oft parodied staircase camera shot at the film’s climax, Nosferatu set the standard for the modern horror film as well as the genre of vampire films. As the earliest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula for film, Nosferatu is the source of several of the most enduring aspects of modern day vampire lore.
