A Vast Vocabulary of Expressive Devices: Two Eighteenth Century Sources on how to Play Marais
Sarah Cunningham, viol
A fascinating source held at Sibley Library in Rochester, NY, an original printed copy of Marin Marais's second book of viol pieces (1701) is chock full of handwritten markings indicating a whole range of expressive bow strokes, different ways of playing chords, short notes, legato passages, and more... and this has now been further elucidated by a more recently discovered manuscript (Villeneuve ms. in Paris BN) containing some of the same pieces, and many of the same markings. This on-line class will delve into the musical possibilities opened up by these sometimes enigmatic signs, with demonstrations, explanations of my process in deciphering them, and a chance to try them out yourself at home. The lessons to be learned are technical as well as musical, opening up a fruitful approach to articulation and sound production. My sense is that these lessons and techniques may be applicable to wind instruments, the violin family, and even keyboard instruments, and I will welcome adventurers ready to experiment. (While most of your experimentation will take place while you are muted, we can also unmute if anyone has questions or discoveries to share!) Open to: viol players, intermediate and up, and also open to other instrumentalists (strings, winds, keyboard). Pitch: A=415 Hz

Celestial Visions of Medieval Britain
Boston Camerata (Mara Winter, guest director)
This program will explore the connection between earthly and celestial forces as expressed in some distinct, compelling visions. Wind player and composer Mara Winter will lead Camerata through musings on humankind’s relationship to the universe, the mystery of creation, and the magic of the natural world, sung in all three of medieval Britain’s literary languages: Latin, English and French. The essential role of instruments in the musical fabric of medieval Britain will also featured, with originally composed instrumental monophony performed in the high medieval style, blending playfully from traditional forms of instrumental music that survive today in the British Isles.“We will travel in an arc through each of these visions and allegory to contemplate the role which the natural world plays in representing the celestial spheres at play on Earth, the moving and unmoving spheres of the cosmos” says Mara. An exciting chance to see the wonderful work of our close team under a new guest leadership!

Continuing Intro to Early Notation: A Focus on Everything Triple
Annette Bauer, early notation & recorder
The last Tuesday series before the summer break, and we will be focusing on pieces that feature triple meter in the form of mensuration, color, or as proportion. While the duple mensuration C and its related forms has become one of the more predominant mensurations in the early 16th century, different ways of expressing triple groupings exist in this time period. This series will refresh the use of rules of perfection and also explain triple proportions notated with numbers or with the help of color sections. A technical emphasis in regards to the mensural notation of the early 16th century continues to be ease of reading moveable clefs as well as ligatures. Sound files of the pieces are accessible for personal practice between classes. The early notation series will resume in September, after Festival, and summer break.
Four Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21, (NO CLASS May 28!) & June 4

Early Notation Series - Composer’s Portrait: Music by Alexander Agricola Part II
Annette Bauer, early notation & recorder
Alexander Agricola (ca. 1446-1506) was born Alexander Ackerman around 1446 in Ghent. He is known as a Renaissance composer in the Franco-Flemish style, and his work comprises all important sacred and secular styles of the time, including masses, motets, secular chansons in forme fixe, as well as instrumental music. He was a prominent member of the Grande Chapelle of the House of Habsburg, and spent most of his life in Italy, France, and the Low Countries. Musically, his work creates a link between the earlier 15th century Burgundian style and the later generation of Renaissance composers like Josquin. This 4-week notation series continues the exploration of secular and sacred music by Alexander Agricola we began in the Wednesday notation session immediately preceding this one. Prior experience with mensural notation, including fluency with moveable clefs, mensurations, and ligature reading is expected. Sound files of the pieces are accessible for personal practice between classes. This is the last notation session before the Festival and summer break. The early notation series will resume in September.

Birds of a Feather
Sarasa Ensemble: Christina Day Martinson, Megumi Stohs Lewis, violins; Jenny Stirling, viola; Jennifer Morsches, piccolo cello; Timothy Merton, cello; Maggie Cole, harpsichord
J.S. Bach owed part of his creative inspiration to the 17th-century’s Stylus phantasticus, a method that sought freedom of form and expression, especially in instrumental works. This program explores several composers who embraced this approach. With a flourishing send-off in the finale of our 25th anniversary year, birds of a feather include Rosenmüller, Reincken, Westhoff, Schmelzer, Scheidt, and Bach, with his sparkling harpsichord concerto in E major.

Passion and Nostalgia
ScheckMate: Raffael Scheck, Baroque and Romantic Cello & Timothy Burris, Theorbo and Romantic Guitar
The program features pieces that express deep passion, sometimes inward-looking and soft, and sometimes exuberant and powerful. From Antonio Vivaldi's introspective but happy suite-like g minor cello sonata, we move to the expressive capriccio #8 by Giuseppe Maria Dell'Abaco and to the passionate Bolero and Solea by Spanish guitar composer Julián Arcas (1832-82). In direct response, the program features an homage to Arcas written in 2017 by German cellist and gambist Dietmar Berger and culminates in the nostalgic three nocturnes by German composer Friedrich Burgmüller. The first two pieces are performed on baroque instruments (cello and theorbo, a baroque bass lute). The other pieces use a Romantic guitar and a Romantic cello.
