In Sweetest Sympathy
Lyracle: Ashley Mulcahy, mezzo-soprano, James Perretta, lyra viol, Sarah Mead, lyra viol
Lyracle presents “In Sweetest Sympathy.” This program will showcase the lyra viol, complete with sympathetic strings, and provide a unique opportunity to hear two of the few such instruments in the world. The term lyra viol can be used to describe a specific style of playing that developed in 17th century England as well as a type of bass viol developed to support that style. Designed to facilitate chordal playing, the lyra viol was often used to accompany the voice. We’ll explore vocal and instrumental repertoire for this fabulous instrument and its relationship to different contexts of music making. We’re thrilled that lyra viol and Renaissance music specialist Sarah Mead will join us on this program.
7:30pm - United First Parish Church - 1306 Hancock St Quincy, MA 02169

Carissimi’s Jephte and Missa L’Homme armé
CANCELLED
Pablo Bustos, tenor (Jephte), Agnes Coaxley Cox, soprano (Filia), with Kirsten Sollek, alto and Peter Becker, bass (Historicus), Jordan Rose Lee and Sarah Fay, sopranos, Crescendo Vocal Ensemble and period instruments: Anne Legêne and Erica Warnock, viola da gamba, Phoebe Durand-McDonnel, harp, Hideki Yamaya, theorbo, Rachel Begley, dulzian. Crescendo’s Founding Artistic Director Christine Gevert conducts from the organ.
The Italian composer Giacomo Carissimi – who continued Claudio Monteverdi’s legacy of dramatic vocal music – tells the story of a human tragedy in one of the first oratorios, “Jephte.” The Israelite general Jephte and his people celebrate a great military victory, and then sink into despair over the loss of Jephte’s beloved daughter. Carissimi’s twelve-voice mass of the Early Baroque is based on the famous medieval folk tune “The Armed Man.” It is the last one of more than 40 masses composed on this tune over 170 years, and also the one with the largest cast.
6pm - Trinity Church, 484 Lime Rock Rd Lakeville, CT 06039
Tickets are $40 (general seating), $75 (premium seating), and $10 (youth). For anyone in our communities needing a free ticket, these can be requested by writing to crescendo@crescendomusic.org.

Mozart + Mendelssohn
David Stern, conductor; Andreas Staier, fortepiano; H+H Orchestra
The gaiety, humor, and sparkle of Mozart’s concerto comes to life via the magical sound of the fortepiano, the instrument for which he composed this work. You’ll especially relish the last movement, which incorporates the song of Mozart’s pet starling! It has been 155 years since H+H performed the glorious “Reformation” symphony, with its stirring “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” finale. Rising to a lofty crescendo, the chaconne by the 18th-century French composer, conductor, and opera director Pierre Berton makes for an especially regal concert opening.

A Brave Barrel of Oysters - Virtual Premiere
Corey Dalton Hart, tenor, recorder; Karen Burciaga, violin; Daniel Meyers, recorders, flute, bagpipes; David H. Miller, bass viol; Matthew Wright, lute; with Alastair Thompson as Samuel Pepys
Perhaps the English language’s most famous diarist, Samuel Pepys was a prosperous civil servant and bon vivant in Restoration London. The diaries he kept from 1660-1668 provide a fascinating glimpse of life during the reign of the “merry monarch” Charles II. An enthusiastic amateur musician who sang and the lute, viola da gamba, and flageolet, Pepys chronicled his experiences making music with the best (and the worst) musicians in town. STS brings this bustling, bewigged, and bawdy London to life with readings from Pepys’ diaries along with music by his many friends including Hume, Blagrave, Young, Locke, and others.
