The Art of Music Appreciation
Frances Blaker, recorder
The Art of Music Appreciation – or how to recognize and enjoy what you are hearing when you listen to music. Enjoying music can happen on many levels, from the unlearned listener who just likes the mysterious sounds floating past, to the astute listener who can hear and perceive all the lines of a composition at once, savoring the harmony, following every aspect of a piece. Most of us fall somewhere between these two extremes. My own experience has been that, the more I perceive and understand, the deeper my enjoyment and satisfaction become. Now I want to help you get a grasp of some of the various elements that make up the river of music as it flows by: melody-accompaniment, rhythms, imitation, phrasing, tone colors and recognizing various instruments and voice, texture from simple to complex. This is a listening class rather than a playing class. We will listen to recordings, follow along in scores, and discuss features of each piece. And in the process, you can enjoy hearing many pieces of many types – what a joy! Open to: all Pitch: A= 440, mostly listening.

Sing in the Spring - medieval songs for Lent and Spring from the original manuscripts
Leah Stuttered, harp
Together we will sing and play some lovely medieval pieces for the season of Lent and Spring including an ancient chant from 10th century notation, a song about a horse by Adam de la Halle and a Benedicamus Domino for the young nuns at Las Huelgas in Burgos in Northern Spain on the route of the Camino to Santiago. We will use the original manuscripts, but don't worry, no previous experience required. You will mostly listen and learn by ear and there won't be any complex technical explanations - the notation is anyway very pragmatic! This class is open to everyone, singers and instrumentalists playing at 440 Hz. The opening warm-ups will focus on singing and breathing (but this is important no matter how you make music) and the early 10th century notation is best sung as it won't be at a specific set pitch. The pieces though could be played on an instrument as well as sung as I will be playing my harp at A=440 to accompany myself singing them. Open to: all singers and instrumentalists.

Music for a French Cathedral
Convivium Musicum
Join us for an exploration of the French Renaissance, when we will be exploring a musical lineage starting in the fourteenth century. From Machaut and Dufay, we will reach forward through Binchois, Ockeghem and Josquin, and end with Compère, Brumel, and de la Rue. This is the 550th anniversary of the passing of Dufay, and we will be singing two of his motets. We will be sharing Ockeghem's mournful motet-chanson "Mort, tu as navré," written for the passing of Binchois, and Josquin's "Déploration sur la mort d’Ockeghem," written for the passing of Ockeghem. A Garden of Earthly Delights: Marco Marazzoli’s extravagant musical entertainments
BEMF Vocal & Chamber Ensemble (Paul O'Dette & Stephen Stubbs, Musical Directors); Teresa Wakim, Carlotta Colombo & Alissa Magee, soprano; James Reese & Aaron Sheehan, tenor; Jesse Blumberg, baritone; John Taylor Ward, bass-baritone; Sarah Darling & Jesse Irons, violin; Maxine Eilander, Baroque harp; David Morris, viola da gamba; Paul O’Dette, chitarrone; Stephen Stubbs, chitarrone & Baroque guitar; Michael Sponseller, harpsichord
Marco Marazzoli’s miniature dramas present a kaleidoscopic variety of arias, duets, trios and quartets culminating in glorious choruses for six voices. Tips for Translation
Yvonne Kendall, instructor
Whether it's working with treatises, performing, or constructing concert programs, translation of foreign languages is a vital skill for early music enthusiasts. Using tools as varied as Google Translate, Power Thesaurus, and historical dictionaries, this lecture/workshop will use famous texts to introduce participants to three main categories of translation that are useful for the practical musician. We will start with calques, literal translation, especially useful for those preparing vocal music for performance. Even with this basic category, however, participants will be alerted to potholes along the road to understanding the texts. The second category, paraphrase, can be steered from the first or be its own destination. This is useful in written or oral program notes, when you simply want the audience to have a general idea of the text, a summary. The final, literary translation, is the most complex, but serves multiple purposes. In this category, the translator aims to produce elements of style, rhythm, rhyme, and “feel” found in the original text that read naturally in the target language. You do not need to have expert knowledge in any of the languages. Open to all.

Vergine Bella II - "The Sequel"
Annette Bauer, instructor
Composers of the 15th-17th centuries were inspired by the poetic works of 14th c. Italian writer and humanist scholar Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374). This class explores various musical settings of Vergine Bella, the final poem in Petrarch’s collection “Rerum vulgarium fragmenta” (“Fragments of common things”), also simply referred to as Il Canzionere (“The Song Book”). Il Canzionere comprises 366 Italian poems, and is a collection of poetry composed over 40 years expressing unrequieted love to a certain “Laura” - Petrarch even continued writing love poetry to her after her death. In an AEM online class back in December of 2022, we played settings of Vergine Bella in 2-5 parts by Guillaume Dufay, Vincenzo Ruffo, Palestrina, and Cipriano da Rore, and explored a few analytical tools to help us understand what sets these different versions apart. Since then, Allen Garvin has made excellent transcriptions of further settings by composers Faa di Bruno (5vv), Merulo (5vv), Portinare (6vv), Romano (4vv), and Ruffo (6vv). In this “sequel” class, we will explore these pieces together. Open to: recorders, melody instruments, intermediate and up. Pitch: A= 440, play-along tracks on recorders (4-foot).

For five voices (and theorbo): Madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi
In Stile Moderno: Agnes Coakley Cox, soprano; Julia Soojin Cavallaro, mezzo-soprano; Corey Dalton Hart, tenor; Adam Jacob Simon, baritone; Andrew Padgett, bass; Nathaniel Cox, theorbo
The five-voice madrigal developed as a genre in the sixteenth century and became a proving ground for young composers. Claudio Monteverdi, whose career bridged the Renaissance and Baroque, was one of these composers, as a teenager testing his skill in his early, Renaissance-style madrigals—but he later began to push the boundaries of the genre, with concertato-style madrigals that were as dramatic and complex as his operas. In our spring concert, we will explore the riches of Monteverdi’s nine books of madrigals, from pristine counterpoint to virtuosic showpieces.

Bach + Telemann
H+H Orchestra and Chorus (Jonathan Cohen, conductor), Robin Johannsen, soprano, soloists TBD
In the spirited hands of our new Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen, these exquisite choral treasures from Bach and Telemann are nothing short of divine. To open the program, the “unimpeachably excellent” H+H Chorus (The Boston Globe) keeps vigil in two contemplative Bach cantatas, with charismatically commanding soprano Robin Johannsen, a favorite from last season, soaring above. Then, after a rollicking romp through Brandenburg No. 6, Telemann gets the final word, comforting us even as he captivates. This is a double feature you don’t want to miss.

VdGS-NE Spring Workshop with Parthenia
Continental Connections: European Influences and Cross-cultural Exchange in English Viol Consort Music
Parthenia: Beverly Au, Lawrence Lipnik, Rosamund Morley and Lisa Terry. Carol Lewis will teach Introduction to the Viol.
The English viol consort music that we know and love so much was influenced by many continental musical fashions that haven’t been as closely explored as the Jacobean fantasy repertoire itself. Throughout the 16th and early 17th century, court composers and musicians, traveling in the entourage of their respective courts, interacted with their foreign counterparts. Some English and European composers traveled to look for work abroad to escape religious persecution at home. In this workshop we will explore the musical connections that flowed in both directions—from European countries to England and back again. These explorations will include Franco-Flemish music in England at the court of Henry VIII, Spanish influences at Mary Tudor’s court, the love of Italian music in Elizabethan England, and Danish and German connections with England when Anne of Denmark, the wife of James I, was the Queen.
9:30am-4:00pm - St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 147 Concord Rd. Lincoln, MA
$80 members/$100 nonmembers/$25 Introduction to the Viol

Carissimi’s Jephte and Missa l’Homme armé
Crescendo Vocal Ensemble, Pablo Bustos (Jephte), Christina Kay (Filia), Douglas Williams (Historicus), Soloists, and Period Instrument Ensemble, directed by Christine Gevert.
A Dramatic Early Baroque Oratorio and a Twelve-Voice Mass. The Italian composer Giacomo Carissimi – who continued Claudio Monteverdi’s legacy of dramatic vocal music – tells the story of a human tragedy in one of the first oratorios, Jephte. The Israelite general Jephte and his people celebrate a great military victory, and then sink into despair over the loss of Jephte’s beloved daughter. Carissimi’s twelve-voice mass of the Early Baroque is based on the famous medieval folk tune “The Armed Man.” It is the last of more than 40 masses composed on this tune over 170 years, and also the one with the largest cast.
