Exhibit: Strong Women in Renaissance Italy
Through more than 100 works from the 14th to the early 17th century, this exhibition explores the lives and experiences of women in Renaissance Italy and offers new perspectives on female creativity, power, and agency. Learn about Sofonisba Anguissola, who served at the court of King Phillip II of Spain and painted more self-portraits than any other artist in Renaissance Italy. One of her self-portraits shows her holding a large shield-like object inscribed with her signature, declaring she painted it. See Renaissance interpretations of historical figures, like a bronze bust of Cleopatra showing the Egyptian queen as pensive and noble rather than seductive and dangerous—a work likely commissioned by Isabella d’Este, one of Renaissance Italy’s most influential patrons of the arts. Get to know the story of Gracia Nasi, a Jewish woman from a powerful family, through the portrait medal cast to celebrate her marriage. Women in Renaissance Italy faced challenges and barriers to equity, education, and influence. But they often found ways to work around or overcome the institutional structures of their time. The mix of sculpture, paintings, ceramics, textiles, fashion accessories, illustrated books, and prints in this exhibition reveals the material lives of Renaissance women and tells empowering and inspiring stories that have long gone untold.
Daily admission - Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA

Quantz’s book “On Playing the flute” - an Overview and Exploration of Performance Practice Issues
Na’ama Lion, flute
Quantz’s book “On Playing the flute”: a general overview and a hands-on exploration of some performance practice issues on the 250 anniversary of the author’s death This workshop is divided in 2 parts: the first one is open to everyone, and will include an overview of Quantz’s book. Although written for flute players, it contains a wealth of performance practice information, from articulation to ornamentation, continuo playing, orchestral playing, tuning, dynamics and evaluating pieces of music. We will spend some time exploring Quantz’s teaching about appoggiaturas, comparing them to the instructions in his published flute duets, as well as his advice about articulation, where to take a breath, and how to come up with an interesting and expressive dynamic scheme for a given piece. The second, shorter part, will include playing one or two slow movements from Quantz and Telemann’s duets and applying what we learned in part 1 of the workshop to make the music come to life.
Open to: flutes, recorders (note that we will be at 415 Hz!), and all instrumentalists interested in exploring Quantz’s performance practice related writings. intermediate and up. Pitch: A= 415 Hz

Building From The Bottom Up: How To Play Bass Lines On The Viola Da Gamba And Cello,
John Moran, viol & cello, and Risa Browder, violin
While much has been made of the differences between the French and Italian styles in Baroque music, one thing they had in common was the importance of the bass line and the significant role played by bowed bass players in shaping the sound of the ensemble. This workshop will explore delightful movements from violin sonatas by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729), acknowledged in her lifetime as one of the greatest living composers in France, and Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672–1749), a highly inventive composer of the Roman school. The class will focus on how to play bass lines supportively to make the treble players’ job as enjoyable as possible and to make the whole sound greater than the sum of the parts. We will explore articulation, phrasing, dynamics, discreet filling in of the harmonies, and ornamentation. This should be as informative to those who play upper parts as it will be to bass players. Students in the class will hear examples played on violin accompanied by viol in the French repertoire and cello in the Italian. Participants will have the opportunity to play along on the instrument(s) of their choice.

The First Flowering of Franco-Flemish Polyphony
Miyo Aoki,recorder
During the early Renaissance, the Low Countries - the land that today comprises the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg - saw a flowering of art in many forms, bolstered by economic prosperity and urban growth. In music, this environment led to a rich repertoire of early polyphony that beautifully united elements of French, Flemish, Italian, and English compositional technique. In the introduction to his treatise Liber de arte contrapuncti (1477), Flemish theorist Johannes Tinctoris complains that up until the very recent past, there were no musical compositions worth hearing, but he approves heartily of current musical trends and heaps praise on several composers contemporary to him, even likening them to gods. We will play music by composers belonging to this early generation of the Franco-Flemish school, such as Guillaume Dufay and Gilles Binchois, and explore composers who influenced them, including Johannes Ciconia and John Dunstable. Open to: intermediate and up recorder players. (Other instrumentalists and singers are welcome to join in on lower parts - sound files are provided on recorders at 4-foot register.) Pitch: A = 440 Hz

O Quam Gloriosum: Music of the Late Spanish Renaissance
Convivium Musicum (Allegra Martin, director)
Convivium Musicum opens our 2023/24 season with "O Quam Gloriosum," an exploration of some of the greatest motets of Renaissance Spain, featuring works by Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, and Tomás Luis de Victoria. Guerrero's exquisite Ave Virgo Sanctissima was famous in its own time for being "the perfect Marian motet," thanks in part to the fluid, effortless manner in which the two soprano parts move in strict canon throughout the entire work. Victoria's tender and atmospheric O Magnum Mysterium may be his most famous piece today; but we will also be sharing Morales' lesser-known but equally evocative setting of the same text. Morales' Clamabat autem mulier and Guerrero's Maria Magdalena et altera Maria are two pieces that explore moments in the story of Jesus with warmth and drama. We will also be sharing one of Victoria's many inspired Magnificat settings; and of course no Spanish program would be complete without a few villançicos! Please join us for this glorious repertoire.

Midwinter Revels: The Feast of Fools - A Medieval Celebration of the Solstice
Revels chorus with medieval band: Karen Burciaga, vielle, rebec; Barbara Allen Hill, soprano, hurdy-gurdy; Ben Matus, dulcian, bagpipes, tenor; Hideki Yamaya, Renaissance guitars
Our 53rd Midwinter Revels drops us into the colorful medieval Feast of Fools, where everything is topsy-turvy by design. The status quo quickly becomes the status disruptus as the body politic officially lets off steam. Rulers are temporarily deposed by servants, wit triumphs over power, and a fool finds himself steering the ship of state. This musical feast will feature vibrant processionals, lively carols, delicate harmonies, vigorous dances, and a full ritual serving of the wild and the holy. Come sing favorites old and new and dance your way with us into the lobby of Sanders Theatre and out into the brand new year! On this shortest day of the year, what could possibly go wrong?
