Music from the Age of Rembrandt
Camerata Trajectina
Rembrandt van Rijn is one of the most recognizable and influential Dutch artists; he helped usher in a creative renaissance in the Netherlands during the 17th century—a blossoming of art, music, and poetry that remains unique in its history. Although few music manuscripts from the period remain intact, countless paintings, including those by Rembrandt, depict people singing and playing together. Music in the Netherlands at the time was a form of domestic recreation—not just for professional musicians in the concert hall or royal court, as seen in other European countries. Even then the Dutch were masters of recycling, setting texts by their own poets and authors to tunes from abroad. Composers gave popular melodies new life with fresh and innovative lyrics, while professional church musicians recast street ditties into sacred music. Enjoy a performance from Camerata Trajectina as they present a range of Dutch musical offerings from Rembrandt’s time, including everything from works by great poets to songs servers would have sung in a bawdy house. Camerata Trajectina has made its name as the “Musical Treasury of the Netherlands.” Its performances combine popular ditties of the 17th century with works by great renaissance and baroque composers—often presented in political, literary, and artistic contexts.
2:00pm - Harry and Mildred Remis Auditorium, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA

Renaissance Flute Consort - AEMF Weekend Workshop
Amanda Markwick (director), Na'ama Lion flute
Join Amanda Markwick and Na’ama Lion for a weekend workshop focusing exclusively on the Renaissance flute consort. We’ll start each day together with group warm-ups on cadences, modes, and hexachords, then divide up into groups to explore the repertoire. Extras include two mini-lectures on topics specifically related to the Renaissance flute, guided instruction on reading from 16th-century notation, and opportunities to try instruments by various makers. The repertoire chosen for this weekend workshop highlights nature as both mirror and metaphor for our human experiences. Laughing meadows, wistful moons, and empathetic forests come to life in 16th-century madrigals and chansons by composers such as Maddalena Casulana, Luca Marenzio, Clément Janequin, and Claudin de Sermisy. This workshop is open to flutists with all levels of experience, from beginners on the Renaissance flute to already existing flute consorts. Upon registration, please indicate your experience with Renaissance flute, if any, and whether you are coming alone or as part of a consort. Please also indicate if you are bringing flute(s) with you, and at which pitch.
October 21-22, 9:30am-5pm - Nathaniel Allen House, West Newton, MA

This concert is sponsored by The Elizabethan Club of Yale University as one of their events celebrating the 400th anniversary of the First Folio publication.
