Fair Firenze: Greatest Hits of Late Medieval Florence
Karen Cook, early notation
We'll tackle works (in facsimile or modern notation, players' pick) by some of the big names in the Squarcialupi Codex, including Francesco "Landini", his teacher Lorenzo, Andrea, Donato, and Gherardello, all of whom are "da Firenze" - from Florence. We'll reach out to other manuscripts to include their neighbor Paolo da Firenze, whose works were supposed to be copied into Squarcialupi too but for some reason never made it in. Madrigals, ballate, and cacce, oh my! Open to: all instruments, intermediate and up. Voices welcome. Pitch: A=440.

A Tale of Two Semitones
Paul Poletti, harpsichord
Most early music musicians are familiar with the oft-stated maxim that “sharps are low and flats are high”. But what does this mean, exactly? How much lower or higher should they be than in equal temperament? And why should they be different at all? Where does this idea come from, for how long was it considered standard practice, how did the early texts describe it, and, most importantly, what practical techniques can we use today to try to incorporate in our playing? In this session, we’ll be examining all this and more on the topic of what was once considered a hallmark of the best musicians: the ability to distinguish between diatonic and chromatic semitones. This session is primarily aimed at players of what were called the "perfect" instruments: the voice, unfretted bowed strings, and to a lesser extent, woodwinds. Players of "imperfect" instruments - keyboards, the lute, and the harp - will of course benefit from knowing about what their colleagues are supposed to be doing. All are welcome!

Revolutionary Renaissance
Crescendo Vocal Ensemble (Christine Gevert, director) with Jennifer Tyo and Sarah Fay, sopranos, Laura Evans, alto, Igor Ferreira, tenor, Christa Patton, harp and recorder, Juan Mesa, organ
This program features motets by the Portuguese composer Vicente Lusitano, one of the earliest known mixed-race composers of African descent, whose works were published in his lifetime. Lusitano’s style resembles Josquin des Prez’, and is highly complex and of extraordinary beauty. We still know very little about female composers of those times, as it was stigmatised for women to perform in public, or be known as composers. We present sacred and secular vocal and instrumental works by Maddalena Casulana (Madrigali 1570), Raffaella Aleotti (Sacrae cantiones, Venice 1593), Claudia Sessa (Canti sacri), and Claudia Francesca Rusca (Sacri Concerti), an Italian nun composer, singer, and organist.
4pm - Trinity Church, Lakeville, CT

Music Appreciation - The Joy of Listening
Frances Blaker, recorder
"Music Appreciation - or how to recognize and enjoy what you are hearing when you listen to Music". Enjoying music can happen on many levels, from the unlearned listener who just likes the mysterious sounds floating past, to the astute listener who can hear and perceive all the lines of a composition at once, savoring the harmony, following every aspect of a piece. Most of us fall somewhere between these two extremes. My own experience has been that, the more I perceive and understand, the deeper my enjoyment and satisfaction become. Now I want to help you get a grasp of some of the various elements that make up the river of music as it flows by: melody-accompaniment, rhythms, imitation, phrasing, tone colors and recognizing various instruments and voice, texture from simple to complex. This is a listening class rather than a playing class. We will listen to recordings, follow along in scores, and discuss features of each piece. And in the process, you can enjoy hearing many pieces of many types – what a joy!

Vermeer's "The Concert"
Sophie Michaux, Douglas Kelley, viola da gamba, Nathaniel Cox, lute, cittern, Andrus Madsen, harpsichord
In 1664 Johannes Vermeer painted a domestic music scene in which a singer is joined by a harpsichordist and a lutenist, with a viola da gamba on the floor and a bandora or a cittern on the table. (The painting was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990 and has never been recovered.) This concert will be a reproduction of the music these musicians might have played, sampling from works widely available in Rotterdam in the 1650s, including then-popular Roman cantatas written for the instruments and voice depicted in the painting. This program will be performed twice in the Warbeke Room, an ideal space for this intimate repertoire. Presented in cooperation with the Mount Holyoke College Music Department.
7:30pm - Warbeke Room, Pratt Hall, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley MA

Tall Tales
Musicians of the Old Post Road
This program will enchant you with storytelling in narrative chamber works by three Baroque masters. Antonio Vivaldi tantalizes and surprises with a haunted soundscape in his Night Concerto for flute and strings. François Couperin’s Apotheosis of Corelli is his self-invented mythological tale of the ascension of his musical idol Corelli to the top of Mount Parnasus. The work is a trio sonata for violins and continuo with narration (read in English) preceding each movement. Bach’s Capriccio on the Departure of a Beloved Brother is a poignant work revealing his early creativity and his ability to blend emotional depth with intricate musical forms. The piece was written as a farewell to his older brother, Johann Jacob Bach, who was moving away from their hometown. The concert closes with Part I of Francesco Geminiani’s rarely-performed epic composition The Enchanted Forest. This work for chamber orchestra in the form of a concerto grosso depicts the defense of a dark, wooded forest by a sorcerer and witches.

Music in the Atrium - Glass Armonica
Vera Meyer, glass armonica
This month, our Music in the Atrium series celebrates the Studio Glass gallery. Come experience this historic glass instrument in action! Inspired by the sound of a wet finger running around the edge of a drinking glass, Benjamin Franklin invented the glass armonica in 1761. It became wildly popular for the rest of the 18th century, despite claims that its unearthly sounds could cause dizziness and summon spirits. Mozart, Beethoven and other composers wrote works for this unusual, haunting instrument. It was even used by Franz Anton Mesmer (whose name and questionable practices gave rise to the word “mesmerize”) to hypnotize his patients. Music in the Atrium is PEM’s live concert series that features local and visiting performers from a variety of musical traditions and styles. Concerts take place on select Sundays.
11:30am-1:30pm - Peabody Essex Museum, 161 Essex St. Salem, MA

One Hundred Years of Song: Singing Early New England Music for Science, Memory, & Abolitionism, 1770–1870
Instructor: Dr. Tim Eriksen, Historic Deerfield Musician-in-Residence
The Revolutionary and early Federal period saw a great outpouring of new choral music by local and regional composers who worked in a lively vernacular style still familiar to many from its place in the “shape-note” tradition. In this course, students will engage with the exciting sounds of this early New England music through singing, listening, and lectures on three historical sites of imagination and musical practice: singing as cutting edge “science,” singing as local history, and singing as social justice work in the 19th-century Abolitionist movement.
7-8:30pm on March 12, 19, and 26 virtually and in person. Historic Deerfield, 80 Old Main Street Deerfield, MA
Registration Fee: In Person $120/$105 (members) and $50/student. Online $100 general, $90 members, $40 student March 12, 2025, 7:00 pm - March 26, 2025, 8:30 pm

Of Reclamation and Joy: A Celebration of Womanhood
Tiny Glass Tavern: Michele Kennedy, soprano, Sophie Michaux, mezzo-soprano, Sarah Darling and Rebecca Nelson, violins, Dani Zanuttini-Frank, theorbo, Benjamin Katz, harpsichord, Adam Simon, bass, mandolin, guitar, voice
Our program is a celebration of the healing power of female creativity as artists, mothers, and gods. An emotional journey of strength, joy, resilience, lifelong passion and deepest tenderness, our program reasserts the role of creativity, nurturing and compassion as essential forces for good in a time of deep fractiousness in our world. The centerpiece of our program is an extraordinary setting of the Stabat Mater by Alessandro Scarlatti, whose 300th anniversary of death we commemorate this year, and who sets a nuanced portrait of Mary and her emotional journey as a mother witnessing the crucifixion of her son. Surrounding the Scarlatti is a wide-ranging illustration of female creativity in song, ranging from masterful Baroque works by Barbara Strozzi, Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani to the more contemporary works of Rebecca Nelson, and Adam Simon with his “Song for Saint Cecilia’s Day” celebrating the patron musicians, as well as songs made famous by Sarah Vaughan and Edith Piaf. Tenebrae, Paris 1703
Newton Baroque: Jason McStoots, tenor, Teresa Wakim, soprano, Laura Jeppesen, viola da gamba, Andrus Madsen, keyboard
The musical experience at church in Paris during Holy Week was quite extraordinary. Opera was forbidden during Lent, so all of the musical resources of the opera were available and utilized by the Parisian churches for Tenebrae services all through Holy Week. Tenebrae is a very dramatic service taking place in a darkened chapel and involved the gradual extinguishing of 15 candles, plunging the church into complete darkness. The ritual also included musical settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah and settings of the 51st Psalm. This concert features Lamentations of Jeremiah by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Sebastien Brossard as well as a richly beautiful 51st Psalm by Michel Delalande.
7:30pm - Lindsey Chapel at Emmanuel Church, 15 Newbury St., Boston, MA
General admission - $35.00, Senior - $30.00, Student/Low Income - $10.00, Under 18 - $0.00
