Hildegard Reanimated: Vision in Vision
The Pandora Consort Kendra Comstock, Angie Tyler, Gina Marie Falk, voices
Beginning our GRRLS TO THE FRONT series this year, The Pandora Consort explores the mystical visions of Hildegard von Bingen through her illuminations and music. Hildegard is an impressive figure in many regards; she was a theologian, philosopher, botanist, doctor, magistra (mother superior), and one of the first named composers of music. Hildegard experienced visions (“umbra viventis lucis” or “the reflection of the living light”) from the age of three up to her death, and many of her writings and illuminations are a result of these visions. Hildegard’s writings, visions, and music are inextricably linked in her life and philosophy. Taking inspiration from her life, the singers weave them together in a voice and harmonium concert program focused on four of her most famous visions that influenced her spiritual philosophy. Working with visual artist Cate Duckwall to bring these visions to life, this concert features music from Hildegard’s vast oeuvre accompanied by artistic animations of key illuminations, creating a multimedia experience.
7pm - Episilon Spires, 190 Main St, Brattleboro, VT
$15-25

A Bach Sampler
Letitia Berlin, recorder
Let’s celebrate Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday--better late than never! We will begin with a harmonization of the Lutheran chorale for times of trouble, Ach Gott, erhör mein seufzen und wehklagen (Give ear, O Lord, and mark my sore complaining), continue with excerpts from BWV 182, Himmelskönig Sei Willkommen (King of Heaven, Welcome) a cantata first performed in Weimar on Palm Sunday in 1714. This cantata has a wonderful recorder part – we will work on technical aspects of the opening Sonata and the aria Leget euch before playing together with a variety of recordings. We will finish with a beautiful arrangement of Bach’s prelude for the organ on the chorale Nun komm der Heiden Heiland (Savior of the Nations, Come). Open to: recorder players, upper intermediate to advanced (inquire for accessibility for less advanced players). Pitch: A= 440.

Medieval songs for Lent and Spring from the Original Manuscripts
Leah Stuttard, voice and harp
Really look forward to singing again with you on Passion Sunday, the 5th Sunday of Lent, the Christian penitential season that precedes the springtime festival of Easter. Like last year, I will screenshare original notation with you all during the workshop and there is no need to prepare anything for my course. We will sing and play together, learning the pieces in a fairly natural way, by ear. Some of the music we’ll look at has notation that can’t be simply sight read – you need someone to teach you the tune and then the notation helps you recall it from your memory. This is not a technical notation class. I won’t be teaching the theory of why particular symbols mean particular things. We will progress rather pragmatically with me singing in short sections, and participants then repeating back with me until I feel we’ve got to a point where we know it! This year we will focus on Mode I, authentic Dorian, “autenticus protus”, learning together one English and one Italian fourteenth century piece from original notation. Open to: all interested singers or singing instrumentalists. Pitch: A=440 Hz

The Boston Camerata
The Boston Camerata’s pioneering programs of early American music have brought pleasure to thousands of music lovers, and have helped to clarify and define our country’s rich and diverse cultural identity. It traces migratory currents and flows of early American song, largely spiritual but also secular. Among the various communities participating in this rich American mosaic we encounter the Puritans of New England, the Shakers and their visionary monodies, Amish and Mennonites of Pennsylvania, and the newly-freed African-American religious communities. The musical sources of this program are drawn from European and New World oral traditions, hymns, psalms and chants in English, German dialects, early songbooks of Black churches, as well as gems from the still largely unpublished Shaker manuscript archive at Sabbathday Lake, ME.
7:30pm - Trinity United Methodist Church, 361 Sumner Ave. Springfield, MA

Harmonizing Divided Worlds: Jewish Music of 17th & 18th Century Italy
Vivian Montgomery, director, harpsichord, with Mezzo-soprano Carrie Cheron, soprano Janet Youngdahl, altos Cameron Dobson, René Minalga-Rheault, tenors Iris Pfrommer, Leo Balkovetz, and basses William Farrell, David Smyth, with Eudaimonia Voices and period instrumentalists
Eudaimonia, A Purposeful Period Band, presents bold and brilliant works by Rossi, Casseres, Lidarti, and Grossi interwoven with ancient chant from the Italian synagogues. This concert highlights the universal narrative of exclusion and discrimination faced by Jewish musicians living in the ghettos of Italian cities and struggling to be recognized in their Christian surroundings. Elegantly expressive settings of Hebrew liturgy offer unique testament to the creative spirit rising above oppressive circumstances and speak to the essential Jewish principle of Lo Ta’amod, to not stand idly by. A pre-concert talk (6:45pm) will be presented by Longy School of Music graduate students taking part in a class on 17th & 18th Century Italian Jewish Music, taught by Dr. Montgomery. Social Action Partner: The Boston Immigrant Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN), a community network of faith communities, individuals and other activist groups working to reduce the escalating harm of our immigration system in the current political context. This concert is a collaboration with the music program of First Parish in Cambridge as part of Eudaimonia’s residency. First Parish in Cambridge is an accessible space.
7:30pm - The First Parish in Cambridge, Unitarian Universalist, 1446 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA
