Rollicking Ricercars
Amy Domingues, viola da gamba
This class is geared towards viols, but any instruments tuned at 415 pitch and reading treble, alto and bass clefs will find it exciting and fun. Join us as we explore the rich repertoire of 4-part 16th century ensemble ricercars. Throughout the 16th century, imitative ricercars were commonly composed for lute and keyboard, but with the publication of Musica Nova (Venice, 1540) a new format for ensemble music was ushered in. Designated not just for singing and organ, but "et altri strumenti", these and later publications of 1556 and 1577 open the genre for all musicians to enjoy. We'll focus on analyzing and playing ricercari by Segni, Malvezzi and Padovano, using specially recorded play along audio tracks. Open to: viols, and other instruments, intermediate level. Pitch: A= 415Hz.

From Seville to Isfahan
Constantinople: Kiya Tabassian, director and setar, Didem Başar, kanun, Patrick Graham, percussion, Hamin Honari, percussion; with Accademia del Piacere: Fahmi Alqhai, Johanna Rose, Rami Alqhai, viola da gambas
The 15th and 16th Century have been described as the «Golden Age» of Spanish music, but they were also without a doubt the golden age of Persian and central Asian music. The great masters of the Spanish Renaissance created their own signature of polyphony. Into what was essentially Franco-Flemish music of the time they wove influences left by the monodic tradition such Cantigas de Santa Maria and also by the Moors and the Muslim cultures so present in medieval Spain. During this time, the courts of Shah Ismail and Sultan Suleyman in the East, welcomed and trained some the most remarkable musicians, composers and theoreticians to grace the pages of the musical history of these regions. This musical journey from Sevilla to Isfahan brings into dialogue the music of the Spanish Renaissance with Persian/Ottoman masterpieces taken from manuscripts unearthed in monasteries and palace libraries such as Topkapi. In collaboration with Fahmi Alqhai, one of the great virtuosos of the viola da gamba, and his Accademia del Piacere, the leading ensemble of early Spanish music, Kiya Tabassian, Persian setar master and his renown Constantinople ensemble, embark on a musical journey through Iberia, Persia, and Central Asia, revisiting music notable for its sumptuous color and exceptionally rich beauty.

More and More Morenas
Rumbarroco: Adriana Ruiz: soprano, Daniela Tosic: mezzo-soprano, Fausto Miro: tenor, Julia Connor: violin, Eduardo Betancourt: harp & percussion, Juan Sebastian Sanchez: percussion, Katherine Shao: keyboards, Kirsten Lamb: bass, Laury Gutierrez: viola da gamba & Venezuelan cuatro
La Donna Musicale and Rumbarroco continue a musical exploration that extends from the Iberian Renaissance to Indigenous and African-influenced folk traditions in contemporary South America. This program includes some of the earliest songs referring to Morenas—dark-skinned women who represented the female ideal of beauty outside the court in early modern Spain. These are songs about pride, self-empowerment, resistance, and how much love and passion was felt for the Morenas. The repertory is drawn from sources ranging from Spanish Cancioneros (“songbooks”) to the Song of Songs, and other selections with their endearing depictions of Morenas, to popular, more contemporary expressions of dark-skinned women in South America. Most of these songs are peppered with Afro-Latin rhythms. Also included are Iberian and Afro-descended dances in a performance that connects the sounds of the past with dances from the Latin America of today. Selections include music from the Coimbra manuscript, and by Gabriel Diaz, Juan de Herrera, Manuel Machado, and others.

Remember me my deir: Scottish music from 1500–1850
Elm City Consort with Shira Kammen, violin and harp; Daniel McGrew, tenor; Harrison Hintzsche, baritone
The rich musical heritage of Scotland consists largely of music that was handed down from one generation to another by oral traditions. Beginning in the 17th century, musicologists and composers began to collect, arrange and publish hundreds of these traditional ballads and folksongs. This music was immensely popular; so much so that composers including Haydn and Beethoven wrote – and sold – their own arrangements of Scottish folk songs. We look forward to presenting some of our favorite pieces of this tradition alongside works by Scottish composers written for more formal entertainment.
5 p.m. - Bethesda Lutheran Church, 450 Whitney Ave. New Haven, CT
